Park Your Rental Car & Go Whale Watching In Maui

If you’re planning a trip to Maui this winter, chances are, you’ve got “whale watching” on your list of things to do. And if it isn’t already on your list, the folks at Allsave Car Rental Maui hope we can change your mind! Whether you choose to go aboard a whale watching eco-tour or simply park your rental car and whale watch from shore, seeing these amazing creatures in their natural habitat is exhilarating and awe-inspiring.

The first humpback whales of the season are usually spotted in September or October as they make their way to their breeding grounds in Hawaii. Their numbers increase throughout the winter months, peaking in February or March, with many sticking around through the spring.

Whale Watching From Shore

Winter and spring are the best times to see humpbacks from shore. According to the Pacific Whale Foundation, the best places for shore viewing are from Maui’s south and west shores. Sightings have also increased off the North Shore recently as well as in Hana. The scenic McGregor Point lookout west of Maalaea and the beaches of Kaanapali, Kihei and Wailea are some of our favorite spots to drive to to witness these remarkable creatures.

Whale Watching Tours

There is an abundance of tour operators departing from Lahaina and Ma’alaea Harbors offering everything from passenger rafts, canoe and kayak tours, to yachts and charter boats. Tours generally last 2-4 hours and are led by expert guides who will take you to some of the best viewing locations. If you can work this into your budget, we definitely recommend parking your rental Jeep and heading out on an eco-tour to get you on the water and within 100 yards of these majestic animals. The ocean views themselves are worth the tour cost!
