Location
Situated on the southern coast of Maui at the end of Wailea Alanui Road, visiting the park in your Maui car rental from nearby Kahului or Wailuku is just a short, 20-mile drive south.
Beaches
Big Beach: A 1.5-mile-long, 100-feet-wide beach, Big Beach is also known as Makena or Oneloa Beach. This enormous swath of sand has plenty of room for lounging and beach activities.
The Makena Cloud, a cloud that forms between Haleakala volcano and the small volcanic island, Kaho‘olawe, sometimes makes an appearance at Big Beach. The cloud hangs over the beach and cools off the sand and appreciative beachgoers.
Little Beach: This beach is considerably smaller than Big Beach. If you want to spend time here, best to arrive early on a low-traffic day like Sunday. Word to the wise: Little Beach allows nude sunbathing, so it may not be the best place for a family day at the beach.
Black Sand Beach: Black volcanic sand makes this beach a must-see for any new visitors to Maui. This beach is also the least-frequented of the three beaches at Makena Beach State Park, which makes it perfect for vacationers who want peace and quiet off the beaten path.
